On the Phenomenon of Lost Comics:
Hello, my name is Lars. You might
know me. Today I'd like to talk about something I call Lost Comics. As of this
writing, there are 237 Blockhead comics on this site. There are probably a good
hundred Blockhead comics that are just sitting in my house somewhere, either because
they were drawn too long ago or simply have inappropriate subject matter. But
the thing is, there are hundreds, if not THOUSANDS of more Blockhead comics that
are not on this site. They have never even been drawn. These are the lost comics.
The
reason they have never been drawn is I have forgotten about them. I was either
in the car, or in the shower, or in class or walking somewhere, at a time when
it was inconvenient for me to write down the idea, and then I simply forgot about
it. Then the next day, I would probably miss an update because I couldn't think
of anything to draw. My inspiration happens intermitently, followed by periods
of writer's block. It is impossible to guage how many of my comics have been lost
because I forgot them and never remembered them again.
Not so anymore.
My mom has given me a great gift, a Digital Voice Recorder. Today in the car I
recorded probably like five ideas for comics into the thing. It's an amazing little
thingy. Today's comic might have been lost without it. There were several hours
between when I thought of it and when I drew it. For others, it will be days.
Now that far fewer comics will be getting lost, what will happen, qualitatively
as well as quantitatively, to the comic? We shall see... stay tuned...
