I'm tired of talking about the missing updates, or buffers of comics,
or whatever like that. Remember when I would just try to get the comic
up on time and write reviews about movies down here? Let's do that.
So let's see... I saw Watchmen.
I enjoyed it... although I must say, it definitely had more sex scenes
and blood in it than I expected or remembered. You may want to consider
such things when you set out to see this particular Superhero movie.
The main complaints I heard about this one were that people who knew
the story well felt that a lot was left out or changed, and that people
who didn't know the story at all weren't able to entirely follow the
plot. For me however, it was just right, as I read the graphic novel
about two years ago... I remembered exactly enough to follow the plot
and enjoy seeing key scenes come to life on the big screen, but forgot
enough not to notice most changes and omissions. I recommend you go
back in time two years and do the same thing.
Saw
Slumdog
Millionaire... It won Best Picture, and it was certainly a good
movie, but... I don't know if it deserved best picture. I dunno, let
me check what the competition was. ... Okay I didn't see any of the
other movies. So y'know, maybe it was just a slow year, y'know seeing
as how the academy doesn't see fit to nominate Superhero
or animated
movies nowadays. Or at least not in that category. (They had to
split animated movies into their own category, after Beauty and the
Beast made all the live-action movies all insecure.) Without giving
too much away, and I don't want to because it was a pretty good movie,
let me just say that it felt lacking in originality to me... felt like
it was a story that we had somewhat heard before. That being said, the
movie is still at least an 8.
Oh, I also saw I Love You Man,
and uh, not much to say about that one except that I thought it was
really good. Really funny, probably the definitive treatment on "bro-ness"
in this modern world. And y'know, I gotta say... coming from a cast
and crew that usually known for crudeness, this movie surprises you
with its maturity... not that there's any lack of crudeness mind you,
just that this maturity shines though a little in other ways. The movie
is much, much funnier and more insightful than you might think from
viewing the trailer... I'd say this is a movie that everyone should
see. With the possible exception of old people. Or maybe just married
people who don't have any single friends anymore, as this movie could
potentially raise some bitterness and why rock the boat?
I saw Monsters vs. Aliens,
and I gotta say, really really funny movie. VERY original too as a matter
of fact. I actually kinda wanna see it again, in 3D this time. And while
the movie is not the first film to be shown in 3D recently, to me it
seems the most justified in doing so... my reason for thinking this?
Monsters vs. Aliens is largely, despite its surprising splashes of heart
and thoughtful themes, an homage to the campy classic horror films of
yester-year. So in the first scene, when an object comes unreasonably
close to the screen, for no other reason than to show off the 3D, sure
it comes off as a gimmick, but an entirely genre-appropriate gimmick.
This one is only a notch or so beneath movies such as Kung Fu Panda
and Horton Hears a Who. I recommend it.
And one thing that really, REALLY excited me were the previews shown
before MvA. Two movies are coming out that I will definitely be seeing.
They are:
A computer animated feature with an all-star cast,
starring and titled: Astro
Boy.
A live-action adaptation of Where
the Wild Things Are.
Are you guys excited? I'm excited. :^).
